The Environment and (in) (on) Film

Where is the environment of the cinema? 

For one thing, the environment is not someplace over there.  It right there on the screen and in the theatre. And although what happens in the theatre may be of interest to some, what is on the screen, for most of us, is more interesting.  However, where is what is on the screen?  Is it only on the screen?  Is it somewhere else and we’re watching a moving picture of it?  Does it even exist at all (think CGI)?
