Tiny House Movement

http://vimeo.com/27390006

A friend of mine posted this video to her blog a while back and I thought I would share it with all of you. It is a short video on a participant in the tiny house movement that is a part of a larger documentary (no pun intended) that is to be released in 2012. Check it out! The tiny house movement is one with growing strength. It is essentially the idea that you build what you need to shelter yourself and that’s it. In turn, the outdoors becomes your living area and your house is a place for sleeping, cooking, and privacy. People who live in tiny houses drastically reduce their carbon footprint by using fewer resources to both build the home and maintain the home. They also take up less space and thus minimize the amount of habitats they destroy. The man in this video built his tiny house outside of Telluride, Colorado. He used salvages material for the most part and included only the bare essentials. He claims to have “walking” instead of running water because there is a well on the property. He uses a small wood burning stove for heat and cooking. He is able to harvest the wood himself. This is one of the most impressive examples of practical sustainable living. This is a presumably single, young man who doesn’t have many needs in the world. So in turn, he has minimized the amount of extras in his life. He doesn’t’ need a huge living room or an Xbox or a TV or a garage. He is only caring for himself so he is not “hindering” anyone else in the process of committing to simplicity. I would assume this man has really come to know himself now that he has left himself very literally to his own devices. I commend him for his tiny house. He is like a more practical Alexander Supertramp.
